Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology

Ain Shams Faculty of Medicine, Abbasseya, Cairo, Egypt.

Dr. Amr Nadim is a graduate  of  Ain Shams University (ASU) Faculty of Medicine in Cairo, Egypt. He Completed internship at the same University. Attended the residency program at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, ASU, where both M.Sc. and M.D. degrees were awarded. He is a foreign research fellow of  the University of Claude Bernard and the Unit of Research Alexis Carrel ; Lyon-France where he was awarded a University Diploma in the field of obstetric and gynecologic echography.

A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at ASU Faculty of Medicine, practicing General Obstetrics and Gynecology, with special interests in the fields of Gynecologic oncology, early detection of genital tract malignancies, Infection prevention, women health with many contributions in the field of medical education reform both in collaboration with ASU, Supreme Council of Universities and the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population.

Dr. Nadim is currently member of the task force for the accreditation process of the Ain Shams Faculty of Medicine, of the Ain Shams maternity and Women Hospital quality control and quality improvement committee and of the Ain Shams Evidence Based Medicine Group.

He recently participated in the Egyptian Health Care Accreditation Program which is part of the Health form Project Plus. The Progress Evaluation Report conducted by three international experts stated that Dr. Nadim is “qualified to be a teacher of future surveyors, one of the very best surveyors, team leader and demonstrated good teaching skills”.

He is recently appointed as member of the medical education unit of the Ain Shams faculty of Medicine.

He is currently participating in multiple Reproductive Health, Educational and Evidence Based Medicine activities.

As chairman of the department, Dr. Nadim is responsible of coordinating the medical education and clinical services in the department and university hospital  introducing and implementing  the concept of mastery learning and teaching in simulated clinical environment and problem based learning.

As faculty at the largest medical school inEgypt, and as a Staff member at one of the largest and busiest maternity hospitals in theMiddle East, the position of faculty member is a great responsibility. Under- and Post-graduate teaching; House officer, Resident and Assistant lecturer training & coaching; Medical research supervision; In- patient and Outpatient services are but some of the tasks required by the position.

The 600 beds Maternity hospital atAinShamsUniversitymakes it one of the best places to learn about Obstetrics and Gynecology. Not only does the hospital supply training facilities in general obstetrics and gynecology, but it also allows for training in the most advanced sub-specialized entities of obstetrics and gynecology. During the four year period of Assistant lecturing, courses on obstetrical ultrasound, gynecologic ultrasound, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, gynecologic cancer screening & early cancer detection, hysteroscopy, colposcopy, surgical gynecologic laparoscopy, management of high risk pregnancy, and training on educational skills for obstetrician/gynecologists were all attended and actively participated within.

-During the period from mid 1993-1994,I traveled toFrancewhere I joined theUniversityofClaude Bernardand the Unit of Research Alexis Carel . In depth research was conducted on Microcolpohysteroscopy and Cancer cervix and its premalignant lesions.During this period, the following activities were carried out:

  • Attendance of cervico-pathology clinic at Hdpital Edouard Herriot with performance of colposcopy and microcolposcopy.
  • Attendance of cytology sessions at the Groupement de Recherches Cytologiques “GRC”.
  • Attendance of Obstetrics & Gynecology ultrasound course and obtaining the university Diploma of OB.GYN ultrasonography.
  • One year research work on the value of Transvaginal sonography compared to Hysteroscopy in patients with abnormal and irregular uterine bleeding together with the evaluation of the role of colposcopy and microcolpohysteroscopy in the evaluation of patients with abnormal cervicovaginal smears

Managerial Positions:

1996-1997        Director of the  Ain Shams University Maternity hospital.


Planning for the Infection prevention program and training the personnel , together with Supervising the implementation of the infection prevention program at ASUMH is a challenging task. The concept of IP is crucial and central to quality health care provision. In addition he supervised and audited the implementation of COPE as a tool for quality service provision in the Hospital.


1996-1999                    Deputy to the General Manager for Casualties- Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital.


Managing The casualty sector of a Public hospital is a great challenge.  The casualty  sector is one of the busiest sectors of the hospital providing care to over 150 patients a day and having a delivery rate of 0ver 12000 deliveries / year.

Ain Shams Maternity is a huge hospital that is divided into 6 functional units. Each unit is a department in itself, with Medical services, Teaching and Research activities. Directing, planning and supervising the activities the hospital involved patient, outpatient, emergency and surgery activities; together with medical school teaching and post graduate training, within an atmosphere of quality patient care.

2007-2008: General Manager of the October 6 University Teaching Hospital




- (1995-till now)Consultancy activities with MEDTEC Egypt, in collaboration with Pathfinder international, till 2002 then the CATALYST consortium till now,  in the Private sector project of the ministry of health of Egypt. The project included multiple educational and scientific activities in the field of Reproductive health, Evidence based medicine and Information technology.

- (1995-till now)Consultancy activities with The Regional Center for Training in reproductive health (RCT), including educational activities, training program planning and implementation.

-(2003-2004)Consultancy activities with CATALYST a subsidiary to USAID , in the activity concerning Reproductive Health programs in Egypt , including educational activities, training program planning and implementation as well as the development of educational modules on reproductive health issues for adolescents and young newly wed couples and  Evidence Based Medicine.

- (2003-2004) Consultancy activities with the National Training Institute (NTI) run by the Egyptian Ministry of health and Population to develop a National Program promoting CME for nurses and Primary Care Physicians on reproductive Health Issues with special emphasis on early detection and management of carcinoma of the genital tract and Maximizing access to quality care.

- As of the year 2005, Performing consultancy activity to the centre of Improvement of Education and Scientific Research of  theAinShamsUniversity.

- Co-editor of the Official Textbook of Gynecology for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Ain Shams Faculty of Medicine.

- (2005-2006) Consultancy activities provided to the Health Workforce Development Project (HWD) sponsored by the Supreme Council of Universities and the USAID. These activities included providing technical assistance toEducationalDevelopmentCentersin various Faculties of Medicine and Nursing alloverEgyptas well as the development of Clinical Learning Guides so as to help the adoption and implementation of the Mastery Learning Approach in medical education.

- (2006) Providing technical Assistance to the International Center of Evidence Based Medicine located in the University of East Tennessee, revising, developing and editing Critically Appraised Topics  (CATs).

- (2005-2007): Participated in the health reform project plus for the development of standards for accreditation of hospitals. He graduated as a certified surveyor for hospital accreditation

- (2006-2007) Head of the department of obstetrics and Gynecology of the October 6 Faculty of Medicine, October 6 city-Egypt.  As a head of the department he was responsible of coordinating both teaching and therapeutic activities while facing challenges of being in a private faculty of medicine.

- (2009): attending workshops organized by NAQAAE (National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education) to get prepared for being a surveyor of medical education.


-  Hysteroscopy:      Training on hysteroscopy was part of the Thesis submitted for the MD. degree. The thesis was titled “A comparative study between hysteroscopy and colpomicrohysteroscopy in the diagnosis of patients with irregular uterine bleeding”.

-  Laparoscopy:       Training on diagnostic and surgical laparoscopic skills was achieved during the early phases of the residency program, and was refined by attending two international training courses at Ain-Shams Maternity Hospital in 1993 and 1995. During the last 4 years, since 1997, contributing as a surgical tutor in the training programs and courses organized by the Gynecologic laparoscopy unit. and the Egyptian Medical Syndicate

-  Surgical Contraception: Skill development for Postpartum IUD (PPIUD) and Tubal Ligation under Local Anesthesia (TLuLA) were subject for extensive training courses as part of the Egypt Safe Reproductive Health Project.  In 1996, I traveled to Nairobi, Kenya to attend a course in Tubal Ligation under Local anesthesia.

-  Conventional surgery: Training on conventional surgical skills was achieved during the early phases of the residency program. Currently practicing conventional abdominal, pelvic and perineal surgery both in the university and private hospitals


- Co-founder with Professor Ahmad Rashed of the Women’sHealthCenterin Nasser Institute of Health and Research. TheWomenHealthCenterat Nasser Institute -Cairo-Egyptis the first center inEgyptcaring about women throughout life and specially past middle age.  Services provided include early detection of female genital tract and breast malignancies, management of cervical dysplasias, diagnosis and management of osteoporosis in addition to other services related to Women Health.

- Co-founder with Professor Ahmad Rashed and ProfessorIhab Abdel Fattahof theWomenHealthCenter–Heliopolis, which is the first and only center caring about women health in the private sector.

-  Treasurer of the Egyptian Menopause Society and editor of the Egyptian Menopause Bulletin


As a staff member of the Ain Shams faculty of Medicine :

-  Co-Supervising several Theses submitted for partial fulfillment of the MSc. degree in Obstetrics and Gynecology

 Current Interests and Activities


-          Evidence Based Medicine Activities:

  • Propagation of Knowledge based on Evidence (EBM) among practicing physicians and pharmacists as part of the Private Sector Project (PSP) undertaken by the MOH with collaboration with Pathfinder International as part of POP3. More than15 courses have been held since the year 2000 through 2002. This was carried out in  collaboration with Professor Fred Tudiver who is the director of the center of EBM inEastTennesseeStateUniversity. Together, we are currently updating an evidence-based CME curriculum for physicians on the use of different methods of family planning and reproductive health.
  • Presenting papers in conferences dealing with the evidence based practice of medicineboth from a clinical application and educational point of views:
    •  An evidence-based approach of managing cardiovascular problems in menopausal women.
    • Towards an evidenced Based Contraceptive prescription
    • Evidence Based Guidelines for Management of preterm delivery
    • Research designs: What does Evidence Based Medicine bring to it?
    • An Evidence Base Approach to undergraduate teaching
    • Women Health: An Evidence Based Perspective

    • Member of the committee for Internal Auditing at ASU Maternity Hospital. Co-Supervising the Weekly Scientific Meeting of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ain Shams University Faculty of Medicine, applying the principles of EBM and creating “EBM-Practice Guidelines for Ob/Gyn Residents”.  Since May 2001 till now.
    • Member of the committee for research- protocol approval. Supervising the bi-monthly seminar for evaluation of protocols and research plans proposed for postgraduate degree fulfillment at the department of Ob/Gyn,AinShamsUniversity since Jan 2001 till now
